Rams Team Up to Help Families in Need for Thanksgiving

Posted Nov 27, 2013

In between preparing for next week’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, Rams players took time out to help area families in the days preceding Thanksgiving.

For the 19th consecutive year, the Rams teamed up with Schnuck Markets and the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis to provide food for approximately 2,000 pre-identified families in need. Rams players contributed $28,765 toward Tuesday’s event, as well as a host of other hunger relief efforts.

Members of multiple position groups spent Tuesday afternoon distributing items at three different Urban League locations throughout the St. Louis metropolitan region, and for the second straight year, Rams defensive linemen delivered food items directly to Jennings-area homes.

“It’s very important to be active in a community that is very supportive of us as an organization,” said veteran center Scott Wells, who captained a group of offensive linemen in volunteering at the Urban League’s St. Louis County location on Tuesday. “To be able to get out there with a group of guys volunteering on their day off to distribute Thanksgiving meals to families that may not be able to provide one, it’s definitely a gratifying experience.”

In addition to aiding families in a tangible way, Wells took considerable pride in the opportunity to spend the afternoon with a number of the families served by the Urban League. The afternoon offered considerable time for Rams players to mingle with community members during the day’s events.

“It was great to see the smiles on peoples’ faces and the handshakes, the hugs, just to see a glimmer of hope and joy this time of year,” Wells said. “We have so much to be thankful for and we’ve been blessed so abundantly, to be able to give back is huge.”

Founded in 1918, The Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis strives to improve the social and economic conditions and opportunities for African-Americans and other minority groups in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Clair County, Ill.
