Monday Notes: Rams Return to Short Practice Week

Posted Aug 26, 2013

The Rams returned to Rams Park early Sunday morning from their game in Denver and after a day of rest, were back on the field with their final preseason game ahead of them.

The team returned to practice on Monday afternoon with a 77-man roster. With the first wave of cuts underway, 11 players were waived today.

The team announced that it departed ways with: K/P Brett Baer, WR Demetrius Fields, WR Andrew Helmick, LS Jorgen Hus, QB Tim Jenkins, DT Al Lapuaho, LB Joseph Lebeau, TE Colby Prince, WR Raymond Radway and CB Robert Steeples. Also, OL Graham Pocic was waived/injured.

“Every single one of those guys that came in early left here a much better football player than they were when they got there,” Head Coach Jeff Fisher said following Monday’s practice. “We praised them for that and their effort, focus, their cooperation with club rules – all those things. It was a great group of young guys.”

The official deadline to tighten the roster to 75 players is tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 27, and the team still has to make two additional cuts to reach that number.

TE Lance Kendricks took the next step in his progression back to the field on Monday and was at full speed with his teammates. He looked to be moving and cutting well in his drills and routes during individual period. The third-year tight end seems to be progressing with increased activity and on track to return to the field in a full time capacity.

Kendricks’ return to the offense will add another aspect to the game plan with his good hands and strong blocking. In an offseason that featured the addition of several weapons to QB Sam Bradford’s arsenal, Kendricks adds another option downfield that has not been seen this preseason.

DT Jermelle Cudjo’s health is also improved and he participated in practice alongside his teammates at full speed, as well.

While both Kendricks and Cudjo are getting closer to game-ready, it is not certain if they will see game action against the Ravens on Thursday.

“It’s a little early to tell,” Fisher said, “but it was really good to see them out there with their teammates and participate in full speed drills.”

The Rams will practice again tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 28, in preparation for their fourth and final game of the preseason against the Baltimore Ravens. The number of plays that the first team will get on Thursday has yet to be confirmed. But for those fighting to earn a spot on the final 53-man roster, the game against the Ravens will be crucial in making the team’s final cut on Sept. 1.
