The St. Louis Rams Community Player of the Week presented by Ameren Missouri is tight end
Mulligan joined the Rams after spending his first two seasons in the NFL as a member of the New York Jets. After playing in all 16 games last year, Mulligan traveled westward and quickly integrated himself with the Rams. In 12 games, the former University of Maine Black Bear has already set a career-high in receptions and yards. But even more memorable was the first touchdown reception of Mulligan’s career, a game-winning grab against the Washington Redskins earlier this season.
But it is not just the gridiron where Mulligan makes his presence felt. He has become an active member in the community, representing the Rams off the field just as well as he represents the organization on it.
Even as he was getting acclimated to a new season, Mulligan participated in Hometown Huddle, a day of service in which the Rams worked with seven United Way agencies. The team hosted over 200 kids at the ContinuityX Training Center for an afternoon of service and fitness activities that incorporated elements of the PLAY 60 campaign. As the kids rotated through various stations, Mulligan was posted up in the weight room. During his demonstration, the tight end showed the kids some of his workout routines and answered many of their fitness and weight-lifting questions.
As a professional football player, Mulligan recognizes the impact he can have on young players learning the game. That is why he took time to speak with players on the Francis Howell football team and offer of encouragement to the group.
Mulligan also participated in the team’s monthly Staff Days of Service Program when he and other Rams players joined members of the organization at the Missouri Veterans Home St. Louis. Together, the group visited with veterans residing in the home and signed holiday cards for soldiers serving overseas. Through the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign, the Rams helped the Red Cross send over 25,000 holiday cards around the world to those defending our country not only to thank them for their service, but to share some cheer with them as well.
Further involving himself with the Rams and the community, Mulligan assisted with the Taste of the NFL – St. Louis. The event, which featured many of St. Louis’ top restaurants and beverage companies, helped raise money for the St. Louis Area Foodbank and the St. Louis Sports Commission. Not only did Mulligan make his rounds to sample many of the offerings, he also interacted with those in attendance. Throughout the evening, he signed autographs and posed for pictures, and even gave his recommendations on the top tables to sample.
While he is a new face in the area, Mulligan has met many community efforts head-on. He has stepped up in clutch situations on the field, and has also become a reliable contributor off of it as well.
“Matthew has been a great addition to the organization,” Molly Higgins, St. Louis Rams vice president of corporate communications/civic affairs said. “He carries himself with tremendous class and has become a player that the community outreach team can count on to help in our many charitable efforts.”
