The St. Louis Rams Community Player of the Week is tight end
This season, Jared Cook reunited with his former Tennessee Titans Coach, Jeff Fisher, as a member of the up and coming Rams team. In Sunday’s home-opener victory against the Arizona Cardinals, Cook was one of them most valuable players on the field posting seven receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns.
Off the field, Cook is no stranger to giving back. In 2012, he received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for his community service while with the Titans. And already in his short time in St. Louis, Cook has made an immediate impact in his new hometown.
This past June, Cook served as an honorary team captain for the St. Louis Rams team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure—a cause particularly close to him. While Cook was still playing football at South Carolina University, his mom, Yulinda, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Yulinda overcame her battle and joined Cook at the race as a survivor. Together they shared their story with a crowd of 40,000 cancer survivors, their friends, family and supporters during opening ceremonies.
Cook also served as the official ambassador for the KidSmart Push for Pencils Campaign. At the 2013 #RamsFanFest, he hosted a drive for school supplies. Collection bins were set out at each entrance to the Edward Jones Dome all day so that fans could donate school year necessities like notebooks, pencils, backpacks and folders. The drive brought in 15,385 items totaling more than $12,000 worth of supplies for local children.
He is also taking part in the Rams All Community Team by purchasing 30 game tickets for each Rams’ home game. He then donates the tickets to children’s hospitals and Big Brothers Big Sisters, so kids can experience the fun and excitement of an NFL game.
This summer, Cook participated in the Jeff Fisher and Friends Celebrity Softball Game to raise money for five different charities. He also volunteered his time to raise money to grant wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses through the Rams’ Make-A-Wish Foundation Night of Wishes.
“When we signed Jared, we were all excited about what he was going to mean to our football team,” said Molly Higgins, vice president of corporate communications/civic affairs, St. Louis Rams. “What we didn’t immediately realize was the tremendous impact he was going to have on the community. I’m confident he’s going to become a fan favorite for the touchdowns he scores on the field, but also for the difference that he makes off the field. He’s been an incredible addition to the Rams and we’re thrilled to have him.” About the Rams Community Player of the Week
Each week during the 2013 season, the St. Louis Rams will select a player who has made a positive impact on the Greater St. Louis community, giving of himself off the field. Each honored Rams Community Player of the Week will receive a gift certificate to Ruth’s Chris Steak House, the Official Steak House of the St. Louis Rams.
