Cheerleaders Hong Kong Blog: Hong Kong Subway - Day 4

Day Four- Hong Kong Subway!

After the exciting events of the New Years celebration last night, we were able to rest a little this morning. We only had one performance, this time for a full crowd in TaiPo, a district of Hong Kong. This 20-minute performance incorporated all 24 of us and was nonstop dancing. Our stage was small, but the outdoor venue was packed and you could tell this relaxed, family-friendly afternoon festival was an important element in the celebrations of the week. We followed a beautiful Russian dance group that preformed to their own live band.

Tonight, we took a trip to the Ladies Market, an open market shopping area featuring street vendors, small local eateries and larger more recognizable stores that we see in America. Haggling is expected at the Ladies Market, thank goodness we still remembered our Cantonese! Here we were able to pick up souvenirs and a few memorable gifts for ourselves as well. Much like yesterday’s Stanley Market, the Ladies Market was a maze of winding alleys that seemed to go on forever and there was something different around every corner.

Next it was time for us to take in a little of the New Years celebrations ourselves. We took a ride on the MTR - the Hong Kong subway - to an area near the harbor where we could see the New Years fireworks. We arrived just as the show was starting, but with it being a 20-minute show, we didn’t feel like we missed much. At one point there was so much smoke from the fireworks, you could hardly see through it. Many of the surrounding buildings featured New Years celebration displays as well, which made it a 360-degree experience. It’s incredible to be able to say we watched something so iconic in the Hong Kong culture.

We’re sad to know our trip is coming to an end, but we expect tomorrow to be a spectacular way to end our time here, stay tuned!

Cheers!
