The Rams return to the field this week after a bye in Week 5 to
take on the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. The game
is the first for Jim Haslett as head coach of the Rams, after Haslett was
named head coach following the dismissal of Scott Linehan. Since moving to
St. Louis in 1995, the Rams are 8-5 in games following a bye week. Last
season following the bye week, the Rams defeated New Orleans, 37-29, to
give the team it’s first win of the 2007 season.
The Rams have faced Washington 32 times (regular season and
postseason), with the Redskins leading the all-time series 22-9-1. The
series dates to 1937. |

4th Quarter
- The
Redskins moved quickly to get those points back, marching promptly into
St. Louis territory. But the defense tightened up again and got a sack
from Pisa Tinoisamoa, the fourth of the day for the defense to force a
38-yard field goal. That made it 16-10 Rams with 10:39 to go.
- The Rams
couldn’t get it going on the next drive after a bad penalty on Alex Barron
for illegal formation nullified what would have been a first down run from
Bulger on third-and-11.
- On
third-and-16, there was inexplicably no pass interference called on a
blatant hold of Jackson down the field. The Rams were forced to punt.
- Left
tackle Orlando Pace left the game with a thigh injury and Goldberg
replaced him.
-
Washington immediately began marching, using Portis as the workhorse.
Portis burst off the left edge for 29 yards to get into Rams’ territory.
- On
third-and-14 from the Rams 31, Campbell hit a wide open Antwaan Randle-El
for a gain of 29 as Atogwe found himself out of position. One play later,
Portis burst in off the right side for a touchdown and a 17-16 lead with
3:47 to go.
- The Rams
took over at their 24 and found themselves in a third-and-13 at their 41
after picking up a first down to Avery for 12 yards.
- On
third-and-13, Bulger lofted a ball deep to the right for Avery, who made a
diving catch for a gain of 43 yards. The play was under review but upheld
and the Rams got the ball and a first down at Washington’s 16 with 39
seconds to go.
- The Rams
had a chance to win the game, in good field position when Incognito got an
unsportsmanlike penalty to cost them 15 yards.
- On
second-and-26, Jackson gained 1 yard.
- With two
seconds left, the Rams sent Brown out for a 49 yard field goal attempt. He
booted it through for a stunning 19-17 win. |
3rd Quarter
- The Rams
opened the half with a nice return from Dante Hall to their 42. A pair of
nice gains from Jackson quickly got them into Washington territory but a
penalty and a loss pushed the Rams back.
- On
third-and-17, Bulger hit Jackson on a swing pass. Jackson darted 13 yards
and would have had a first down but center Nick Leckey missed on a down
field block.
- The Rams
opted to go for it on fourth down. Bulger hit Holt for a gain of 7 yards
for the first down and Jackson picked up 8 and 9 yards on a pair of
carries.
- On
first-and-10, Jackson missed the play because of an equipment issue.
Travis Minor lost 2 yards and a fade to Holt went incomplete. On third
down, Jackson took a handoff on a draw for 7 yards. The Rams settled for a
25-yard field goal from Brown to make it 13-7 with 8:21 to go.
- The
defense continued its strong performance as Victor Adeyanju got a sack on
third-and-1 and the Redskins had to punt. Hall came up with another nice
return, this time going 34 yards to give the Rams the ball at Washington’s
44.
- Bulger
threw deep to Avery on the first play but it was under thrown and
incomplete.
- After a
punt, the Rams got another three and out as Little got a sack and forced
fumble. A shanked punt from Durant Brooks gave the Rams possession at
Washington’s 33.
- A false
start penalty stalled the chance to get a touchdown but Brown hit from 44
yards out to make it 16-7 at the end of the third
quarter. |
2nd Quarter
- The Rams picked up
a first down on a 15-yard swing pass to Jackson. A holding call stalled
the drive though and the Rams had to punt. - The defense came up with
another turnover a few plays later as a bad snap resulted in a fumble
recovery for rookie Chris Long.
- The Rams took over
at their 49 and picked up 8 yards on two plays. On third-and-2, Bulger
dropped a short pass into Klopfenstein’s chest but he dropped the ball
when he was hit and the Rams were forced to punt again. The Rams did not
convert either turnover into points.
- Running back Brian
Leonard suffered a shoulder injury on a special teams play and will not
return.
- Also, Adam
Goldberg replaced Jacob Bell at left guard for helmet issues. He returned.
- Another stop by
the defense resulted in a three-and-out for the Rams.
- The defense
continued its best half of the year, coming up with its third takeaway of
the half, but this team left no doubt for the offense to try to convert to
points.
- Campbell dropped
back to pass, Leonard Little hit the ball at the line and Pete Kendall
caught it. Pisa Tinoisamoa hit Kendall, jarring the ball loose and free
safety Oshiomogho Atogwe scooped it up and darted 75 yards untouched for a
touchdown. The extra point made it 10-7 and the Rams enter the locker room
with the lead on the road for the first time in 2008.
|
1st Quarter
- The Rams got a defensive
stop to open the game with the help of a drop from receiver Santana Moss.
- But the punt rolled down to
the Rams’ 3 and the offense started off backed up already.
- A 1-yard carry from running
back Steven Jackson preceded a fumble from him on the next play. LaRon
Landry recovered at the St. Louis 3.
- Clinton Portis scored on the
first play and the Redskins went up 7-0 with 10:45 to go in the first
quarter.
- The Rams’ first chance to
respond to adversity didn’t go so well as they promptly went three and
out.
- The defense came up with a
nice stop of its own, getting a sack on a blitz from cornerback Ricky
Manning Jr.
- The offense showed its first
signs of life on the ensuing possession as Bulger hit Avery for a gain of
17 and Klopfenstein for 15 more. The drive stalled at Washington’s 33 but
kicker Josh Brown sneaked it in from 51 yards out to make it 7-3
Washington with about four minutes to go in the quarter.
- The defense appeared to be
back on its heels but forced the first turnover of the season by
Washington’s offense as Corey Chavous ripped the ball from tight end Chris
Cooley. Jason Craft recovered and the Rams took over at their
28.
- At the end of the first
quarter, the Redskins lead the Rams 7-3. |

Notes
WASHINGTON D.C. –
-
Greetings from FedEx Field, the largest stadium in terms of capacity in
the NFL. It’s a great setting for the fans and they are out in full force
for their 4-1 Redskins.
-
Inactives for the Rams include no surprises. Brock Berlin is the third
quarterback. Receivers Keenan Burton, Drew Bennett and Dane Looker are
down as are cornerback Tye Hill, running back Antonio Pittman and guards
Roy Schuening and John Greco.
- As
expected, Derek Stanley is up and active and will be involved in the
offensive package. Also, Joe Klopfenstein will get the start as expected.
-
Unfortunately for the Rams, the Redskins will have their full complement
of talent. Jason Taylor is active and not starting but he’ll be plenty
active against the Rams.
- Be sure to check in after each
quarter for more updates.
