(1 p.m. Update) The First Practice

-         Greetings from Russell Training Center, where the Rams have officially kicked off their first minicamp under new coach Steve Spagnuolo.

-         The team just completed its first practice under Spagnuolo and the new man in charge says he liked what he saw in the first go-round.

-         “(It) actually (went) pretty good and I will tell you what the greatest indicator was we were scheduled to get off at 12:20 and we got off about 12:16 or even earlier,” Spagnuolo said. “I told the guys it was very efficient for the first practice.”

-         The deal with tight end Billy Bajema is officially complete and he was on the field wearing No. 47. Other numbers for some of the Rams’ additions are James Butler in 37, Mike Karney in 44 and Jason Brown in 60.

-         There are plenty of new faces abound here today, many of whom will be around for depth and numbers. Here’s a quick rundown of players new to the roster (aside from the obvious, big ticket free agent signings): receiver Jason Tomlinson of Navy, fullback Reagan Maui’a, safety Craig Dahl, tight end Cody Boyd, tight end Eric Butler, center Tim Mattran, tackle Daren Heerspink, receiver Horace Gant, receiver Scott Mayle and defensive tackle Mike Marquadt.

-         Some players are in on a tryout basis but Spagnuolo says all are being looked at.

-         “Billy (Devaney) has done a good job of putting together a good group of guys we can go out here and practice with,” Spagnuolo said. “They are all being evaluated. They are all pretty much the same that way.”

-         The only player not participating in any of the workouts (though he’s attending meetings) is receiver Derek Stanley. Stanley suffered a severe knee injury against Seattle in December and is still rehabilitating the injury.

-         Aside from that, the rest of the Rams are working in at least some capacity. Tight end Randy McMichael, cornerback Tye Hill, defensive tackle Adam Carriker and running back Brian Leonard are among those participating in at least some of the practices.

-         In addition, the players who are technically not under contract (Oshiomogho Atogwe, Richie Incognito and Victor Adeyanju) all continued to participate and have been involved in the offseason conditioning program as well.

-         Spagnuolo said it speaks to the makeup of those players that they are doing everything without long term, signed contract. Atogwe, of course, received the franchise tag while Incognito and Adeyanju are restricted free agents.

-         “It says a great deal,” Spagnuolo said. “It says a lot about the character of the person. I have already conveyed that to those guys. I think it’s a great thing.”

-         The Rams are set to practice again this afternoon and we’ll be back with more with thoughts from some of the players then.
