With a sagging offense that has scored just 29 points in
three games, Rams coach Scott Linehan made a major move Tuesday in hopes of
finding a spark as he named Trent Green the starting quarterback this week
againstBuffalo .
Quarterback Marc
Bulger had struggled to get in a rhythm in the first trio of games for a variety
of reasons. Bulger came under fire plenty from myriad blitzes and pass rush
schemes.
Also, though, he
simply missed on some makeable throws. Linehan addressed Bulger’s performance
Monday using a golf analogy.
“You have got a 15
foot putt, you’ve got to make it,” Linehan said. “You’ve got a third and 7, you
have to be able to hit the guy even if the protection isn’t perfect. Guys have
got to get open for him. We have to protect for him. We have to get the running
game going. And the score has got to be even. All of that stuff. But that’s what
gets any of us going. We have got to make plays even when the plays aren’t easy
to make. Marc is no different than everyone else on our team. It’s time for the
play makers to step up and make plays and coaches have to give them the
opportunity to do it.”
Linehan will give
Green the opportunity to do it against the Bills. Green’s return to the Edward
Jones Dome as a starter comes almost eight years in the making. His last start
as a Rams quarterback came in 2000 when he replaced an injured Kurt Warner for
five games.
Green has missed 19
games in the past two seasons because of complications from concussions. But
Green has a proven track record, throwing for almost 28,000 yards and 162
touchdowns in his 14 plus seasons in the league.
ROSTER MOVE: The
Rams made on change to the practice squad Tuesday, releasing linebacker Marc
Magro and adding receiver Matt Caddell.
