Team sources confirmed late Monday evening that tight end
Dominique Byrd’s time in St. Louis has come to an end.
The Rams released Byrd on Monday afternoon after a two-year
stint with the club in which Byrd failed to live up to expectations.
In his two seasons in St. Louis, Byrd played in 14 games with
six catches for 73 yards and a single touchdown.
The Rams drafted Byrd in the third round, No. 93 overall, in the
2006 NFL Draft. Byrd came to the Rams from Southern California where he had
built a reputation as a dynamic pass catcher.
But Byrd was never to realize his potential amidst high
expectations and a few off the field issues that hampered his development. The
Rams are believed to have attempted to get an extra draft pick for Byrd over the
weekend and when they were unable to, decided to part with him.
The Rams will head to their minicamp with Randy McMichael, Joe
Klopfenstein, Anthony Becht and newly signed rookie free agent Doug Jones at
tight end.
