-As you probably
know by now, coach Scott Linehan did not return to Mobile for the rest of the
week after departing to attend the funeral service for Georgia Frontiere.
Linehan will have access to plenty of practice tape on each player when he
returns to St. Louis.
-In the
meantime, the complications from the funeral service have left the search for an
offensive coordinator in a holding pattern. Nothing has changed in terms of the
candidates and nobody knows for sure when it will come to an end. Perhaps by
early next week or even over the weekend, the Rams will have an offensive
coordinator in place. Ditto the secondary coach position.
-Greg Olson has
officially made the move to Tampa Bay as the quarterbacks coach. Wayne Moses is
the new running backs coach at UCLA.
-It was hard to
take too much from Thursday’s practices as the rain made things difficult and
all of the players were wearing shells. The rain certainly didn’t help any of
the wide receivers, who all seemed to have trouble hanging on to the ball.
-One receiver
who continues to make a strong impression is Kansas State’s Jordy Nelson. Nelson
has plenty of speed and is better running routes than his previous reputation.
He’s a fast riser.
-South Florida’s
Ben Moffitt reminds me of Rams linebacker Tim McGarigle. He’s always around the
ball and he can plug holes in a straight line.
-Maryland
defensive tackle Dre Moore is an interesting prospect. He is raw, but boy is he
strong and he has quite the motor.
-Michigan
quarterback Chad Henne is certainly the best quarterback here and he continues
to throw the ball well, even with the wet balls in Thursday’s morning practice.
-Delaware
quarterback Joe Flacco has a really strong arm and has good mobility. I’m not
sure he’s accurate enough, though. He looked better as the week went on.
-USC tight end
Fred Davis did not participate Thursday morning. Michigan State’s Kellen Davis
is a specimen and he looked pretty solid most of the week. Missouri’s Martin
Rucker, meanwhile, has drastically improved his in line blocking throughout the
week and is making a comeback in the eyes of scouts. He will need to excel in
that are in Saturday’s game to solidify himself in the second to third round
range.
-That’s all for
today, not much going on as team personnel leave and practices were limited.
I’ll be returning to St. Louis in the next day or so, but keep an eye out for
more Nick’s Note and mailbags as the offseason continues, including live chats
from Indianapolis and the scouting combine in February.
