NFL Draft Preview: Kickers and Punters
Wednesday, April 18, 2007

By Nick Wagoner
Senior Writer

For most of their time in St. Louis, the Rams have played an ongoing game of musical punters.

Whether because of lack of production or age, punters have come and gone without much of an opportunity to leave any sort of legacy. Last season, the Rams brought in Matt Turk to handle the punting chores.

Turk had a solid season, finishing near the top of the league in a variety of punting categories. But he signed just a one-year deal and his age would seem to preclude him from being the long-term solution.

With that in mind, the Rams have spent part of this offseason searching for that solution. First, the team added B.J. Sander. Then, last week, the team signed Miami punter Donnie Jones to a five-year offer sheet.

It remains to be seen whether the Dolphins will match the offer, but Jones is young enough (27) that he could be just the answer the Rams have been looking for. Fortunately, the Jones situation will be sorted out in time for the upcoming NFL Draft.

With the draft a couple of weeks away, punter could be a position of need for the Rams if they don’t land Jones. With Jones in the mix, the position won’t be much of a pressing need.

The top punters in this year’s draft include Baylor’s Daniel Sepulveda, Maryland’s Adam Podlesh and Auburn’s Kody Bliss.

Meanwhile, at kicker, the Rams still have no need to make an addition. Jeff Wilkins remains one of the top kickers in the game. Wilkins is likely on his final NFL contract and when it expires, the Rams could have the need for another young leg.

But it’s nearly impossible for a team to carry two kickers and a punter in this era of the NFL, so it isn’t likely the team will look to add a kicker in the draft. It is possible the Rams could grab a developmental leg as an undrafted free agent.

The top kickers in the class include Colorado’s Mason Crosby, Auburn’s Matt Clark and UCLA’s Justin Medlock.

The Top Kickers and Punters

1.       K Mason Crosby, Colorado

2.       P Daniel Sepulveda, Baylor

3.       K Matt Clark, Auburn

4.       K Justin Medlock, UCLA

5.       P Adam Podlesh, Maryland

Sleeper: K Brian Wingert, Northern Iowa – Has a strong leg and excellent accuracy. Overlooked because of his school and inconsistency.
