By Nick Wagoner The Rams made another move in free agency Tuesday afternoon, adding former Saints’ cornerback Fakhir Brown to the mix. Brown is the fifth free agent signed by the Rams in a little more than a week, agreeing to a five-year deal two days after St. Louis signed linebacker Will Witherspoon to a six-year deal. The Rams signed defensive tackle La’Roi Glover last week followed by receiver Isaac Bruce, safety Corey Chavous and Witherspoon. Brown spent the past four seasons with the Saints. In New Orleans, Brown played for Rams’ defensive coordinator Jim Haslett while Haslett was the head coach. It’s no coincidence that Brown became a target of Haslett and the Rams in their continued efforts to improve the league’s 30th ranked defense. Most of Brown’s time with the Saints was spent in a nickel and sub-package corner called on to help when opponents went to three and four-receiver packages. Brown played in 12 games last year, starting four because of injuries ahead of him. He finished with 31 tackles, six passes defended and four special teams tackles. In signing with St. Louis, Brown joins a crowded defensive back field that is wanting for talented cover men. As it stands, the Rams are counting on Jerametrius Butler to return from injury to handle the top corner job with Ron Bartell, Travis Fisher and DeJuan Groce in place behind him. Brown will likely be given a shot to compete with that group for a spot, whether it is to fill the role vacated by Corey Ivy as a nickel back or to step in as a special teamer. Terms of Brown’s contract are unknown at this point, but it’s not likely that it broke the bank. Brown arrived in town for a visit this morning and wasted no time agreeing to a contract. For his career, Brown has 202 tackles (178 solo) with three interceptions, 46 passes defended, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two special teams fumble recoveries, one blocked punt, and 39 special teams tackles. He started his career with San Diego, where he spent a pair of seasons in 1999 and 2000. ---
