Legendary NFL coach Don Coryell will be the honorary captain Friday night when the St. Louis Rams host the Washington Redskins at the Edward Jones Dome. Coryell was an NFL head coach for 14 seasons, five seasons with the St. Louis football Cardinals (42-29-1 record from 1973-77), and nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers (72-60 record, from 1978-86). He compiled a 111-83-1 record in his career, leading his teams to the playoffs six times. Led by the “Air Coryell” offensive attack, the Cardinals won back-to-back division titles in 1974 and 1975, as St. Louis went 10-4 and 11-3, respectively. The Cardinals went 10-4 in 1976, just missing out on a wildcard bid. During those five seasons, QB Jim Hart passed for 12,269 yards and 85 touchdowns. The three consecutive 10-plus win seasons are the only such seasons in Cardinals’ history. Coryell moved to the Chargers in 1978, posting winning records in his first five seasons in San Diego, including three straight division titles from 1979–81. The Chargers’ offensive attack became known as ‘Air Coryell’ as well, and during their consecutive division titles run, it was one of the most explosive in league history. QB Dan Fouts passed for at least 4,000 yards in each of those years, throwing 87 touchdown passes. The Chargers had at least two receivers who posted 1,000-yard receiving seasons in each of those years, as Charlie Joiner and John Jefferson accomplished the feat in 1979, Kellen Winslow, Joiner and Jefferson all had 1,000-yard seasons in 1980, and Winslow and Joiner did it again in 1981. As with the Cardinals, the three consecutive 10-plus win seasons during Coryell’s tenure with San Diego are the only such seasons in Chargers’ history. ---
