MARNI DYER’S NFL EUROPE DIARY: MIDWAY POINT, MAY 9

By Marni Dyer

Here we are, halfway through the season, and I can hardly believe how fast it’s gone. We are not quite where we would like to be, just under .500 at 2-3, but we still have time to get back in the hunt. Last week’s game in Berlin was a difficult one to watch, at least until the fourth quarter. Our team seemed to sputter both offensively and defensively until late in the game. At that point, we were down 24 points, which proved to be too big of a deficit for us.

Despite the loss, the trip to Berlin was pretty fun. We drove past the Berlin Wall, which was amazing. It was hard to imagine the city being divided into East and West, but it was awesome to be in a place filled with so much history. I do wish we had more time to spend in each city. Unfortunately, the most I ever see is on the bus ride to and from the stadium and the hotel.

Because we played on a Sunday last week and are playing this Saturday, we had a short week. I didn’t have a day off like I usually do, and it sure made this week fly by. The weather here is getting nicer and it makes practices more enjoyable when the sun is out. It is hard to believe that in only five weeks, the regular season will be done.

We had a team event this week, going to a comedy show in Amsterdam on Thursday night. It was called “Boom Chicago”, an American group of improv comics, and it was hilarious. They poked fun at American culture as well as the idiosyncrasies of the Dutch culture, so it was very relatable for all of us. I think all of the players really enjoyed it.

At this point in the season, I am starting to miss home a bit more, but I’m also not anxious to rush through this experience. It will be strange to leave all of the people you spend every waking minute with and to leave such a great city. I am definitely looking forward to the second half of the season and if it’s anything like the first half, it will be over before I know it. ---
