Steve Loney is in his second season as offensive line coach for the Rams. In 2008, Loney’s blockers helped RB Steven Jackson average 118.4 scrimmage yards per game, best in the NFL. The 45 sacks given up by the Rams were the fewest allowed by the team since 2003.
Loney joined the Rams in 2008 after one season as interim head coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to Drake, Loney completed a five-year stint in the NFL, 2006 as offensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals and 2002-05 as a member of the Minnesota Vikings staff, coaching the offensive line from 2002-05 and adding offensive coordinator duties in 2005. The Vikings led the NFL in rushing in 2002, led the NFL in total offense in 2003 and in 2004 set a franchise record for yardage while QB Daunte Culpepper broke virtually every Vikings’ passing record and posted the fourth-best passer rating in NFL history.
Loney enjoyed three coaching stints at his alma mater Iowa State, first as a graduate assistant in 1974 and as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach from 1995-97 and 2000-01. Loney’s offense spearheaded back-to-back bowl seasons in 2000 and 2001. In 2000, the Cyclones averaged 424.4 yards per game, third-best total in school history. Heisman Trophy finalist Troy Davis in 1995 and ’96 became the only tailback in national collegiate history to rush for a pair of 2,000-yard seasons.
Loney was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at the University of Minnesota in 1998-99. The Golden Gophers were second in the Big Ten Conference and 11th in the nation in rushing offense in ’99.
Loney was assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Connecticut in 1994 and made his NFL coaching debut as an assistant offensive line coach for the Phoenix Cardinals in 1993.
Loney coached 25 years at the high school and college levels. After his coaching debut at Iowa State in 1974, Loney moved to Missouri Western from 1975-76. He was head coach at Leavenworth High School in Kansas from 1977-78 then went to Morehead State University from 1979-83, serving as head coach the final three seasons. Loney also coached at The Citadel (1984-86) and Colorado State (1989-92).
A letterwinner on the offensive line for Iowa State in 1973, Loney earned his bachelor’s degree in distributed studies and his master’s degree in secondary school administration at the school.
Steve and his wife, Terri, a former collegiate golf coach at Colorado State, have three children: Matt, a lawyer and the president of Stevi B's Pizza in Atlanta, Ga.; Katie and Kylan. They also have five grandchildren. Kylan was an All-Pac-10 Conference honoree and four-year starter on the Arizona State women’s basketball team and was named a recipient of the 2005 Pac-10 Medal of Honor.
