Note: Sleeper alert focuses on players who aren't considered regular starters but have favorable matchups and could produce at a high level. Owners beware focuses on prominent players with unfavorable matchups who could fail to meet statistical expectations.
START OF THE WEEK
Willie Parker, RB, Pittsburgh: Fast Willie is on pace to rush for over 1,600 yards (that would be a career best) based on his current level of production, but he has found the end zone just once since Najeh Davenport has become the latest touchdown vulture in the Steel City. Still, it's hard not to love Parker against a Broncos defense that ranks dead last in the NFL against the run. The Orange Crush has also been, well, crushed at home, where it has allowed an average of 200.0 rushing yards per game. Look for Parker to rush for 100-plus yards in this battle of AFC stalwarts.
QUARTERBACKS: START 'EM
Tony Romo, Dallas: Romo came out on the short end of the stick in last week's loss to New England, but he still threw two touchdown passes and is on pace to finish with 45 total scores. Those immense projections could increase this week against Minnesota, which ranks dead last in the league against the pass and has surrendered an average of over 311 passing yards per game on the road. The Vikes have also allowed five passing scores in three road contests, so look for Romo and his impressive arsenal of weapons to post some tremendous stat lines.
Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle: One of the better draft values in fantasy football, Hasselbeck is on pace to finish with a career-best 4,027 yards and 24 touchdowns. He should bolster those numbers this week at Qwest Field, where he'll face a St. Louis defense that has surrendered an average of 27.0 points and close to 215 passing yards per game on the road. Hasselbeck has also thrown for a combined 827 yards and six touchdowns in his past three starts against the Rams, so his success against them is evident. The veteran out of Boston College should be active in most formats.
More quarterbacks with favorable matchups: Tom Brady at Miami, Drew Brees vs. Atlanta, Donovan McNabb vs. Chicago, Carson Palmer vs. N.Y. Jets, Chad Pennington at Cincinnati.
Sleeper alert: Jeff Garcia at Detroit.
QUARTERBACKS: SIT 'EM
Jay Cutler, Denver: Cutler was touted as a solid sleeper candidate in the preseason, but the former Vanderbilt standout has been a bit of a disappointment after six weeks of action. At his current rate of production, Cutler will finish with 3,706 passing yards, 16 total touchdowns and 19 interceptions. While he should show flashes of brilliance down the road, Cutler will struggle to perform this week against a formidable Pittsburgh defense that ranks second in the league against the pass and has surrendered an average of 14.0 points and 195.0 passing yards per game on the road.
Daunte Culpepper, Oakland: Culpepper has posted decent numbers in his time as the Raiders' starter, but this is not the week to lean on him. The veteran faces Kansas City, which ranks seventh in pass defense and has surrendered an average of 18.7 points and under 180 passing yards per game on the road. What's more, the Chiefs have surrendered just two passing touchdowns and picked off five passes outside of Arrowhead Stadium, and only Matt Schaub had more than 220 passing yards against them. Unless you're desperate, Culpepper should be left on the sidelines.
More quarterbacks with unfavorable matchups: Brian Griese at Philadelphia, Byron Leftwich at New Orleans, Cleo Lemon at New England, Ben Roethlisberger at Denver, Matt Schaub vs. Tennessee.
Owners beware: Marc Bulger at Seattle.
RUNNING BACKS: START 'EM
Larry Johnson, Kansas City: Fantasy owners waited for what seemed like forever for Johnson to break out, and it happened last week when he had 119 yards and one touchdown in a win over Cincinnati. Now he should make it two in a row, as the Chiefs heads to Oakland to face a Raiders defense that ranks 28th against the run and has allowed an average of over 145 rushing yards per game. The silver and black have also surrendered eight rushing touchdowns, which is the third-most in the NFL. Even behind a less effective offensive line, L.J. should make some noise.
More running backs with favorable matchups: Shaun Alexander vs. St. Louis, Kevin Jones vs. Tampa Bay, Thomas Jones at Cincinnati, Willis McGahee at Buffalo, Brian Westbrook vs. Chicago.
Sleeper alert: Kevin Faulk at Miami.
RUNNING BACKS: SIT 'EM
Ahman Green, Houston: Between injuries and poor production, Green has been a real disappointment between the white lines. Based on his current numbers, he will finish with an unimpressive 675 rushing yards and fewer than four touchdowns. This week's matchup against Tennessee is far less than favorable, as the Titans rank first in the league against the run and have allowed an average of 12.5 points and 45.3 rushing yards per game on the road. It might be hard to reserve him with four teams on a bye, but Green will be hard pressed to post solid numbers.
Cedric Benson, Chicago: When you're a regular member of the Sit 'Em section of this column like Benson, it's clearly not a positive for your value. The former first-round round pick has more fumbles than touchdowns after six starts, and his 3.1 yards-per-carry average is less than stellar. This week he'll head to Philadelphia, which ranks ninth in the league in run defense and has allowed an average of just under 85 rushing yards per game at home. Unless Benson's motivation to perform well increases, he'll continue to leave owners between a rock and a hard place.
More running backs with unfavorable matchups: Marion Barber vs. Minnesota, Ronnie Brown vs. New England, Edgerrin James at Washington, Marshawn Lynch vs. Baltimore, Fred Taylor vs. Indianapolis.
Owners beware: Joseph Addai at Jacksonville.
WIDE RECEIVERS: START 'EM
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Cincinnati: One of the most underrated wide receivers in fantasy football, Houshmandzadeh is on pace to record 1,600-plus yards and 22 scores. He has also seen more targets than all other NFL receivers, and his numbers should continue to lead owners to wins. This week he'll face the New York Jets, who rank 27th in the league against the pass and have surrendered 10 receiving touchdowns. Another reason to love Houshmandzadeh is his immense success at home -- he has 19 catches and two touchdowns in two starts on his own turf.
Joey Galloway, Tampa Bay: Galloway has been hit or miss this season -- he has three starts with 70-plus yards and three with 50 or fewer yards. This week should be a hit, as he faces a Detroit defense that ranks 30th against the pass. The Lions have also allowed 10 receiving touchdowns, which is tied for the fourth-most allowed after six weeks. Despite his extended age, Galloway still has the speed to stretch defenses and will no doubt be a prominent option in the Buccaneers' pass attack. Consider him a borderline No. 2 or 3 fantasy wideout in most formats.
More wide receivers with favorable matchups: Plaxico Burress vs. San Francisco, Laveranues Coles at Cincinnati, Torry Holt at Seattle, Derrick Mason at Buffalo, Terrell Owens vs. Minnesota.
Sleeper alert: Roddy White at New Orleans.
WIDE RECEIVERS: SIT 'EM
Hines Ward, Pittsburgh: Ward is slated to return after a three-week absence, but that doesn't mean he should be a must-start receiver on fantasy teams. Before he was hurt, Ward averaged three catches for 36 yards and found the end zone just once. Aside from his lack of production, Ward must also contend with Champ Bailey, Dré Bly and the top-rated Denver pass defense. The Broncos haven't allowed more than 84 yards to a wide receiver in three contests at Invesco Field, so Ward could be in for a difficult afternoon in what should be a terrific AFC contest.
Darrell Jackson, San Francisco: Jackson's move from Seattle to San Francisco has been a detriment to his fantasy value, as the veteran is on pace to produce the worst full-season totals of his career. Jackson, who scored 10 touchdowns in 2006, has not scored once this season and is on pace to record 51 catches and 672 yards. Now he'll have to face the Giants, who have allowed an average of less than 195 receiving yards per game at home and have new life after a slow start. Even if Alex Smith returns, Jackson should be left reserved in most formats.
More wide receivers with unfavorable matchups: Marty Booker vs. New England, Lee Evans vs. Baltimore, Brandon Marshall vs. Pittsburgh, Jerry Porter vs. Oakland, Reggie Wayne at Jacksonville.
Owners beware: Larry Fitzgerald at Washington.
TIGHT ENDS: START 'EM
Jason Witten, Dallas: There might not be a better option at the tight end position this week than Witten, who has emerged as a fantasy superstar in the offense of new coordinator Jason Garrett. Based on his totals, Witten will finish the season with career bests in receptions (85), yards (1,211) and touchdowns (11). He should increase those totals this week against Minnesota, which ranks 32nd against the pass and has allowed eight receiving touchdowns. The Cowboys will throw the football a ton in this contest, so look for Witten to have another immense stat line.
Chris Cooley, Washington: I rode Cooley last week and he produced with nine catches for 105 yards and one touchdown in a loss to Green Bay, so I'll remain on the bandwagon. The veteran tight end out of Utah State faces an Arizona defense that has surrendered eight receiving touchdowns and ranks a mediocre 17th in the league against the pass, so Jason Campbell will no doubt continue to look to his favorite target in the pass attack. With the likes of Antonio Gates and Kellen Winslow on a bye week, Cooley will be one of the most attractive options at his position.
More tight ends with favorable matchups: Dallas Clark at Jacksonville, Vernon Davis at N.Y. Giants, Tony Gonzalez at Oakland, Jeremy Shockey vs. San Francisco.
Sleeper alert: Greg Olsen at Philadelphia.
TIGHT ENDS: SIT 'EM
L.J. Smith, Philadelphia: Smith is one of the more talented tight ends in the NFL -- he has averaged over 600 yards the past two seasons -- but an injured groin has kept him at less than 100 percent for much of the season. He returned last week with minimal reward, and it seems like the ailment is still an issue. He'll be a gametime decision to face Chicago, but fantasy owners should avoid him even if he is active. Chicago's defense isn't what it was last season, but it has held tight ends to seven catches for 64 yards and no touchdowns in it's past two road contests.
David Martin, Miami: Martin posted two touchdown receptions in last week's loss to Cleveland, so he no doubt was a popular name on the waiver wire in some leagues. However, the veteran tight end out of Tennessee has a sore ankle and a bad matchup this week against a New England defense that ranks fourth in pass defense and has allowed just two touchdowns to tight ends this season. What's more, the Pats have allowed an averaged of just two catches and 33.6 yards a game to tight ends not named Gates, Winslow or Witten, and Martin isn't even close to being on that elite level.
More tight end with unfavorable matchups: Daniel Graham vs. Pittsburgh, Randy McMichael at Seattle, Heath Miller at Denver, Zach Miller vs. Kansas City.
Owners beware: Owen Daniels vs. Tennessee.
KICKERS: START 'EM
Matt Stover, Baltimore: Here's a little bit of fantasy football trivia. Which kicker leads the position in fantasy points this season? No, it's not Nate Kaeding, Adam Vinatieri or Neil Rackers -- it's Stover. The veteran has converted on 18 of 21 field goal attempts, and he's on pace for close to 50 total conversions based on his current numbers. He should be considered a must-start option this week in Buffalo, where the Bills defense has surrendered 12 field-goal conversions in five contests. That number ties for the fifth-most conversions allowed in the entire NFL.
Stephen Gostkowski, New England: Kickers that play behind high-octane offense tend to be nice fantasy options, and that's been true with Gostkowski. He has scored the fourth-most points at his position in NFL.com's standard scoring system, and he'll see more opportunities to produce this week when the Pats travel to Miami to face the Dolphins. The Fins have surrendered the second-most field-goal conversions in the NFL with 14, ands the Patriots should move the football at will. That's good news for Gostkowski, who should be active across the board.
More kickers with favorable matchups: Josh Brown vs. St. Louis, Kris Brown vs. Tennessee, Shayne Graham vs. N.Y. Jets, Jeff Reed at Denver.
Sleeper alert: Shaun Suisham vs. Arizona.
KICKERS: SIT 'EM
Neil Rackers, Arizona: Rackers has converted on two or fewer field goals four times this season, but he's also made three field goals twice and still ranks in the top five in fantasy points among kickers. This could be a week to reserve him, however, as Rackers faces an underrated Washington defense that is allowing an average of just 13.3 points per game on their home field. The Cardinals will find it hard to move the football on offense with third stringer Tim Rattay under center, so opportunities could be few and far between for Rackers in this NFC battle.
Jason Hanson, Detroit: Hanson started the season hot with five field-goal conversions in the first two weeks, but he has cooled off quite a bit since then. In fact, Hanson has just two conversions in his past three starts and has made just 50 percent of his attempts in that time. Aside from his own statistical issues, Hanson also must face a Tampa Bay defense that has surrendered a mere six field-goal conversions in its six contests. The Lions should be able to move the football on the Bucs, but that doesn't mean Hanson will see opportunities to score points.
More kickers with unfavorable matchups: Jay Feely vs. New England, Joe Nedney at N.Y. Giants, Ryan Longwell at Dallas, Jeff Wilkins at Seattle.
Owners beware: Jason Elam vs. Pittsburgh.
DEFENSES: START 'EM
N.Y. Giants defense: The G-Men produced solid numbers in last week's win over Atlanta, and their encore against San Francisco should be fruitful as well. Whether it's Alex Smith or Trent Dilfer at the helm, the Niners have been able to muster little offense all season and will be vulnerable to an aggressive Giants defense.
Philadelphia defense: The Eagles are a nice option for fantasy football owners this week based on the consistent success of defensive units that have faced the Chicago offense this season. In NFL.com's standard scoring system, defenses that have faces the Bears have averaged an impressive 18.3 fantasy points.
More defenses with favorable matchups: Baltimore defense at Buffalo, New England defense at Miami, Seattle defense vs. St. Louis, Washington defense vs. Arizona.
Sleeper alert: Kansas City defense at Oakland.
DEFENSES: SIT 'EM
Tampa Bay defense: The Buccaneers are much improved on defense this season with the addition of rookie DE Gaines Adams, veteran LB Cato June and emergence of LB Barrett Ruud, but fantasy owners should still avoid this unit against a Lions offense that has averaged 28.5 points and over 360 total yards per game at Ford Field.
Miami defense: Despite the presence of DE Jason Taylor and LBs Zach Thomas and Joey Porter, the Dolphins have been one of the more vulnerable defenses in the NFL. This unit should be reserved this week against Tom Brady and an unbelievable New England offense that averages an NFL-high 40.0 points per game on the road.
More defenses with unfavorable matchups: Arizona defense at Washington, N.Y. Jets at Cincinnati, Minnesota defense at Dallas, San Francisco at N.Y. Giants.
Owners beware: Jacksonville defense vs. Indianapolis.
