RAMS WELCOME FALCONS TO ST. LOUIS FOR FIRST TIME
SINCE 2003
Date: December 2, 2007 | Kickoff: Noon
CT | Site: Edward Jones Dome(66,000) – St. Louis,
Mo.
Game Preview |Game Release
The Rams
play their second consecutive home game this week, hosting the Atlanta Falcons at the Edward Jones Dome. This contest
will mark the first time that the Rams have played Atlanta since the
2004 NFC Divisional Playoff and the first time that the Rams have hosted
the Falcons since 2003.
The Rams have played the Falcons 73 times, leading
the all-time series 46-25-2. The Rams have faced only San Francisco (117), Green
Bay (89), Chicago (87) and Detroit (80) more than the Falcons. The Rams have had
success against the Falcons. The 46 wins against the Falcons are the third most
against one franchise in Rams’ history behind San Francisco (60) and Chicago
(48). The Rams have shutout the Falcons six times.
The Rams and the Falcons met twice each year from
1967-69 as members of the Coastal Division of the Western Conference and then
from 1970-2001 as members of the NFC West. After division re-alignment in 2002,
the Rams and Falcons have met only three times, with the Falcons holding a 2-1
lead.

Game Story
By Nick Wagoner Senior
Writer
After another fast start and slow second half, the
Rams once again were able to hang on for a win Sunday at the Edward
Jones Dome.
Oshiomogho Atogwe's interception and Steven
Jackson's 50-yard touchdown run preserved a 28-16 win against
Atlanta at the Edward Jones Dome on Sunday.
The win was the first for the Rams at home this
season and their third in four games. The victory improves St. Louis
to 3-9, the same record Atlanta drops to with the loss.
Fourth Quarter
Atlanta made a change at quarterback to open the quarter, going
to Chris Redman as the signal caller. The move paid immediate
dividends as Redman completed all five of his pass attempts for 50
yards with a 15-yard touchdown toss to White.
The Falcons failed to convert the two-point conversion, leaving
the Rams with a 21-9 lead with 11:48 to play.
Atlanta got a stop on the next possession when Jackson dropped a
third down pass that would have gone for a big gain and, possibly, a
touchdown.
The Falcons offense went to work again, quickly moving down the
field on the strength of Redman’s arm. Redman hit Michael Jenkins
for a 5-yard touchdown. The extra point cut the score to 21-16 Rams
with 7:17 to play.
Atlanta got the ball right back as Frerotte threw into coverage
and was intercepted by safety Chris Crocker. The Falcons took over
at the Rams’ 33.
On third-and-20, Redman hit Crumpler for a gain of 21 yards and a
first down to give the Falcons a fresh set of downs at the St. Louis
22.
The Rams held Atlanta to 2 yards after another first down,
setting up a huge fourth-and-8 with 2:20 to go. Tye Hill covered
Horn close and came up with a pass breakup to stop Atlanta at the
Rams’ 9.
Needing a first down to help ice the game, the offense couldn’t
muster more than 2 yards and had to punt back to Atlanta.
For the second time this season, free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe
preserved a victory, coming up with an interception on the first
play of the ensuing drive. Atogwe’s interception gave the Rams the
ball at the 50.
On the second play of the possession, Jackson ran 50 yards off
the left side for a touchdown to finish the game. The extra point
made it 28-16 with 1:17 to go.
Third Quarter
The Falcons scored first in the quarter after the
teams traded punts. The Falcons marched into St. Louis territory on
the strength of a 36-yard run from running back Jerious Norwood.
The Rams defense tightened up, though, and held the
Falcons to a 41-yard field goal from kicker Morten Anderson. That
boot made it 21-3 with 8:24 to go in the third quarter.
Left tackle Alex Barron suffered a finger injury and
was replaced by Gorin. Petitti moved in to Gorin’s spot at right
tackle.
The Rams offense picked it up on the ensuing
possession, as Frerotte hit Jackson for 25 yards. A sack stalled the
drive, though, and the Rams had to punt.
The defenses traded interceptions within three plays
as Frerotte was intercepted by safety Lawyer Milloy. Two plays
later, Brown picked off a Harrington attempt at the St. Louis 32.
At the end of three, the Rams lead Atlanta 21-3.
Second Quarter
A relatively slow second quarter closed with a bang
for the Rams as the defense continued to dominate and the offense
found its rhythm with an impressive late drive.
Cornerback Ron Bartell made the big play for the
defense, simply ripping the ball from receiver Roddy White for a
forced fumble and a fumble recovery. After trading punts, the Rams
took over on offense at their 20 and promptly marched the field.
Frerotte hit running back Steven Jackson for a gain
of 37 yards. A 19-yard strike to Holt set up an 8-yard, one-handed
touchdown toss to Isaac Bruce. The touchdown pass and the extra
point gave the Rams a 21-0 lead, the margin they hold at halftime.
Frerotte was 15-of-20 for 230 yards and three
touchdowns in the half. Holt has four catches for 111 yards with a
touchdown. Bruce has 26 yards and passed Cris Carter for fifth in
all time receiving yards with his touchdown grab.
Atlanta failed to score despite a late drive and
trails 21-0 at the half.
First Quarter
The Rams won the opening toss and put together
another excellent opening drive, moving 75 yards on 11 plays in five
minutes and 20 seconds. The key play of the drive was a 23-yard
strike from Frerotte to receiver Torry Holt.
A week after struggling from the 1, the Rams ran a
play action pass on first down and Frerotte hit tight end Randy
McMichael for a 1-yard touchdown. Jeff Wilkins’ extra point made it
7-0 Rams with 9:40 to go in the quarter.
Frerotte was five-of-six for 50 yards with a
touchdown on the drive.
The defense started with Carriker at tackle,
contrary to the pregame indications with Eric Moore getting the
starting nod at end opposite Adeyanju. Cornerback Fakhir Brown
(tailbone) got the start and is full go.
The defensive alignment mattered not, though, as
that group gave up a single first down before getting off the field
three plays later. After being backed up to their 1, the Rams
offense quickly marched the rest of the field on a trio of explosive
completions.
Frerotte hit Holt for a gain of 38 then Drew Bennett
for 24 more before hitting Holt again from 31 yards out for a
touchdown. The extra point made it 14-0 Rams with 3:38 to go in the
quarter.
The Rams covered 95 yards on six plays and look as
crisp on offense as they have at any point this season. On two
drives, Frerotte is nine-of-10 for 147 yards and two scores. Holt
has three grabs for 92 yards and a score.
The defense got another three and out before the
offensive momentum slowed with a three and out of its own.
At the end of the first quarter, the Rams lead 14-0.
Pregame Notes
- Greetings from the Edward Jones Dome, where
the Rams are still searching for their first win at home and their
third win of the season against Atlanta. - As expected,
quarterback Marc Bulger is inactive because of a concussion and will
be on the sideline in street clothes today. Gus Frerotte gets the
start with Brock Berlin up and available as the backup.
- Defensive end James Hall (ankle) is also inactive and
unavailable. Adam Carriker will start at defensive end in Hall’s
stead. Carriker will be on the outside with Victor Adeyanju and
Clifton Ryan and La’Roi Glover in the middle. Carriker and Adeyanju
should be fine against the run, but expect Atlanta to try to pass
with Carriker and Adeyanju still relatively raw as pass rushers.
- Dante Hall (ankle) is also out and Brandon Williams will
replace him. Hall aggravated the ankle during last week’s game.
- Other inactives for the Rams are defensive back Eric
Bassey, Marques Hagans (third quarterback), center Brett Romberg
(ankle), tackle Mark LeVoir and tight end Dominique Byrd.
- Andy McCollum will start at center in place of Romberg
with the rest of the line the same as last week. Brandon Gorin will
likely start for Petitti at right tackle. - For Atlanta,
D’Anthony Batiste will start at right guard as Kynan Forney and Todd
Weiner are both injured.
