Game Story

Fourth
Quarter
The Rams
got a first down to open the quarter on a 9-yard completion to Drew
Bennett but Jackson suffered a blow to the head and is being
evaluated.
The
offense stalled out again after a sack by Kerney as he spun past
Petitti to kill the drive. Seattle got it back at its 20 as the
special teams failed to keep Jones’ punt out of the end zone.
The
Seahawks again took advantage, this time fullback Leonard Weaver
punched it in from 5 yards out to give Seattle a 24-19 lead with
5:57 to go. Hasselbeck keyed the drive, completing passed for 16, 19
and 18 yards to put the Seahawks in scoring position.
Jackson
returned to the field for the Rams’ ensuing possession. The Rams
went three and out, though, needing a stop to get the ball back to
even have an opportunity to come back.
The
defense got said stop as Brown missed a 52-yard field goal, giving
the Rams excellent field position at their 42 with 2:44 to play.
Frerotte
hit Bruce for 10 yards on the first play and the Rams then benefited
from a pass interference on Deon Grant for a gain of 24 yards to
Seattle’s 15. Jackson gained a yard on first down.
Frerotte
hit Bruce for a gain of 8 yards before Frerotte sneaked for 1 yard
and the first down. A review came from the booth and the spot was
upheld to give the Rams four shots at the end zone from the 4.
On first
down, Frerotte missed a wide open Bruce for what would have been a
touchdown. On second down, Frerotte hit Bennett for a gain of 2.
On third
down, Jackson got a carry up the middle for a gain of 1. With the
game on the line and the ball at 1, Frerotte fumbled the snap and
the Seahawks took over on downs to win the game.
Seattle
improved to 7-4 and the Rams fall to 2-9 with the
loss.
Third
Quarter
The Rams
offense started the second half staggering, going three and out on
the opening possession. Seattle took advantage, driving into St.
Louis territory.
A sack
by defensive tackle La’Roi Glover helped foil the drive, though, and
Brown hit a 33-yard field goal to make it 19-10 Rams with 9:36 to go
in the third quarter.
Linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa suffered a sprained left ankle on
the drive and his return is doubtful. Chris Draft replaced him at
weak side linebacker.
After
trading punts, Dante Hall came up with a 37-yard punt return to give
the Rams the ball at Seattle’s 39 with a chance to add to the lead.
The Rams
gave it right back though when Seattle cornerback Marcus Trufant
intercepted Frerotte and Seattle quickly marched down the field.
On just
five plays, the Seahawks put it in the end zone as Hasselbeck hit
Deion Branch for a 9-yard touchdown. The extra point cut it to 19-17
Rams with 3:22 to go in the quarter.
The Rams
hold that lead and the ball heading into the fourth quarter.
Bulger
was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Second
Quarter
Bulger
will not return to the game because of a concussion suffered when
hit on his interception in the first quarter.
The Rams
pieced together a nice drive behind Frerotte as he found a rhythm
and hit on all of his first eight pass attempts. Frerotte hit Drew
Bennett for 18 yards, Randy McMichael for 19 and Bruce for 11 before
throwing his first incompletion on third and goal at the 10.
Kicker
Jeff Wilkins converted a 23-yard field goal to give the Rams a 19-7
lead with
8:07 to go in the
half.
Seattle
moved
into
St. Louis
territory
and appeared poised for a score to cut the lead to five. Instead, on
first and 5, Hasselbeck overshot his receiver and safety Oshiomogho
Atogwe intercepted it.
The Rams
punted back to Seattle and stopped Burleson for little return.
Seattle attempted a hail mary at the end of the half, but the
completion fell short.
The Rams
lead 19-7 at the half.
First
Quarter
The Rams went on defense first
and picked up where it left off after a dominant performance against
San Francisco last week.
That unit quickly got a three
and out, putting pressure on quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. Linebacker
Will Witherspoon picked up a sack on second and third downs,
continuing in his role as the Rams’ premier pass rusher since the
season ending injury to Leonard Little.
The offense had good field
position, taking over at its 42 and after a long completion to Torry
Holt for 21 yards, appeared to be in scoring position. But a third
down sack by Leroy Hill caused quarterback Marc Bulger to fumble.
Petitti recovered and the Rams punted with Donnie Jones dropping it
to be down at Seattle’s 2.
After a false start penalty
pushed it back to the 1, rookie defensive tackle Adam Carriker
stuffed running back Maurice Morris for a loss and a safety, giving
the Rams a 2-0 lead with 8:46 to go in the quarter. The safety is
the first for the Rams since Dec. 4, 2005 when Washington
quarterback Mark Brunell fumbled the ball out of the end zone.
The Rams took advantage
immediately when running back Steven Jackson burst off the right
side for a 53-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. The
run was the team’s longest of the season and the second longest of
Jackson’s season. The extra point made it 9-0 Rams with 8:30 to go
in the quarter.
Seattle was not fazed by the
quick score, though, answering as fast as possible. Josh Wilson
returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. That return
was the third consecutive game in the teams’ meetings where Seattle
returned a kick or punt for touchdown. Josh Brown’s extra point made
it 9-7 Rams.
The Seahawks continued to
swing momentum when defensive end Patrick Kerney intercepted a
Bulger pass on third down to give the ball back to Seattle at the
Rams’ 30.
Bulger suffered a back injury
on the sack on the first drive of the game and went to the locker
room. Gus Frerotte is warming up and is expected to enter the game.
The defense did its job,
coming up with a three and out before Brown actually missed a kick
against the Rams, this time from 46 yards out.
Frerotte and the Rams
struggled on the ensuing possession, punting after Kerney came up
with a sack and forced fumble. But Jones hit another high arcing
punt and Pisa Tinoisamoa jarred the ball loose from Nate Burleson.
Eric Bassey recovered and the Rams took over on Seattle’s 30.
Andy McCollum replaced Romberg
at center on the possession and the Rams took advantage. Frerotte
hit Isaac Bruce for a 15-yard touchdown on third-and-6 and the extra
point gave the Rams a 16-7 lead with 29 seconds left in the quarter.
Romberg aggravated an ankle injury and won't likely return.

Notes
-
Greetings from the Edward Jones Dome where your
friendly neighborhood Senior Writer is basking in the glow of
aUniversity of
Missouri win against the
Beakers from Kansas on
Saturday night. Said writer is also a bit tired from a late night
return from Kansas
City .
But he’s here to tough it out and provide stlouisrams.com with its
usual excellent (and modest) coverage of today’s game against
Seattle .
-
A couple of important notes as far as changes on the
starting lineup. The offensive line will have three new starters
from last week. Todd Steussie will handle right guard duties with
Rob Petitti at right tackle and Brett Romberg at center. Romberg’s
status was in doubt as he recovered from a sprained ankle, but he
got his job back on his return from the injury. Petitti beat out
Brandon Gorin for the starting job and will likely not rotate as the
pair has done in recent weeks. Steussie, of course, is in his first
game of the season after returning from a foot injury earlier this
week.
-
That leaves the Rams with the following inactives:
third quarterback Marques Hagans, Brandon Williams, Tim McGarigle,
Nick Leckey, Dustin Fry, Mark LeVoir, Dominique Byrd and Trevor
Johnson.
-
Defensive end James Hall will play on a sore ankle and
will start. He said he expects to play most of the day, which will
be important to help create pass rush against
Seattle
’s high octane
passing attack.
-
Seattle
’s
only inactive of note is running back Shaun Alexander. Alexander is
battling a knee injury and was ruled out early in the
week.
