MARTZ ON THE MIKE: AUGUST 17

ON POSITIVES FROM THE GAME: 'Leonard [Little] played very well in this game. They were in a lot of quick-drop passes. Brian Young, for the time that he was in there, played very well. Courtland Bullard showed up pretty good in this game…tremendous progress from last week. He and LB Kole Ayi made tremendous strides this week. We started a rookie, Fisher, at corner. He was awfully tentative early, and I think, obviously, as a rookie in your first outing you kind of have a tendency to be that way. But as the game went on he played much better and I was pleased with how he ended up the game. On offense, probably the two guys…Heath Irwin and Travis Scott played exceptional football at guard in the second offensive line. They did an outstanding job. I’m very pleased with both those guys. Sometimes those efforts go a little unheralded, but they were really good in this game. The two running backs were good. They were physical. They’re tough guys. I was very disappointed in the turnovers by both of them. That wasn’t an illegal shot. He had the ball for quite some time before he got hit, he just needs to hang onto the ball. I don’t believe the safety was trying to go head to head with him, it’s just one of those collisions that happen in football.'

'Brandon [Manumaleuna], obviously he scored the touchdown, did some really good things. He had five pancakes in the game. He’s very consistent. It was a typical preseason game. We had our mistakes. There are some uplifting things by some key players that you get excited about and young players trying to make a move to make this roster.'

ON QB MARC BULGER: 'I was really trying to evaluate Marc [Bulger]. Marc’s got a ways to go yet. The composure part of it was what I was worried about. It’s not an issue any more for me. He’s very composed. I was very pleased with that aspect of it. Now it’s just a question of making good decisions. He had about two or three real poor decisions in that game that happen with young players that he needs to grow from. And he’ll get better with that. The learning curve for him now that the composure has been dealt with will go very quickly. And that’s exciting in a young quarterback.'

REGARDING WHAT HE WILL DO NOW THAT TWO OF HIS SAFETIES ARE HURT: 'Willie [Gary] will probably get a chance back there a little bit. We think that we might have Rich Coady back this week. Looks like we got a chance to get him back. We’ll fill in the ranks. We’re going to keep Kim [Herring] out another week. We want him completely healed before we expose him to anything.' ---
